One of the Master Plan’s primary considerations was a design approach that addressed both inpatient and outpatient programming goals equally. The Center had to be connected to the existing inpatient hospital serving the hospital’s patient base as well as the newly envisioned outpatient cancer patients. The Mater Planning process resulted in the design and creation of a new, all-inclusive, outpatient Cancer Treatment Center for the Central Pennsylvania Region.
Another primary goal was to use as many nature and green elements in the overall design. The site plan considered the sun’s orientation and added many exterior gardens as focal points. Interior Healing Gardens and nature photography was used throughout, as a soothing effect for patients undergoing treatment. The use of natural wood, stone veneer, and river rocks were also incorporated into the design.
The Center provides comprehensive Cancer care, including Radiation Therapy, Medical Oncology, Breast Health Care, an Outpatient Infusion Unit, Diagnostic Imaging, and private physician offices. The project was developed on a fast track basis, with documents being developed for foundations and structure to allow construction to begin while the building envelope and corresponding interior fit-out documents were still in process.
The facility is associated with the Fox Chase Cancer Research and Treatment Center which necessitated further programming in order to properly facilitate this partnership. The project is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
