March 19, 2021 – This is the fourth year in a row that Murray Associates Architects, P. C. had multiple projects celebrated for their design excellence. The MARE Journal provides the most comprehensive coverage of the commercial real estate industry pertaining to the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C.
Best Architecture of 2020 – D&H Distributors New Corporate Headquarters, Harrisburg, PA. A 1970’s office was transformed into modern workspace affording the company to double their staff of 750 people. There is a new full-service cafeteria, game room, contemporary workspaces, multiple break and meeting rooms, a Data Center, an Innovation Lab and a two-story slide.
The original 244,512 gsf space was dark and claustrophobic. Removing portions of the second floor for an amphitheater created a welcoming collaborative work environment. Many sustainable design features were utilized including removing the perimeter offices providing natural light into the core and a new open-plan layout requires less energy for heating and cooling. Twelve new windows; a skylight; LED lighting; recycled carpeting; repurposed furniture; reflective ceilings and low flow plumbing were also incorporated. https://online.flippingbook.com/view/1034903902/94/
Best Interior Architecture of 2020 – Harrisburg University’s Student Union, Harrisburg, PA. The 7,950 gsf Student Union fit-out has collaborative learning, small group areas, private study spaces, conference rooms, meeting spaces, an Aquaponics Lab, a Wellness Center and a self-service Bistro. A mezzanine created a glass-enclosed classroom and additional collaborative space. A custom designed amphitheater, outfitted with a multi-media and a 3 x 3 seamless video wall display, serves as a multi-purpose venue for lectures, presentations, a distance learning laboratory and student/community event space.
This state-of-the-art facility integrates student life with academics, building a greater sense of community. The university already had a presence in the Whitaker Arts and Science Center, as Murrays transformed the basement into an esports training center for Harrisburg University’s nationally recognized team, The Storm. It made sense to create another unique, vibrant and fun place for the entire student body to utilize.
