The Harrisburg Housing Authority, Gardner Capital, a national housing developer headquartered is Saint Louis Missouri; RB Development a BFW affiliate, and the Bethel AME Church in Harrisburg have proposed a 49-unit affordable senior development.
Murray Associates Architects, P. C. was selected to design the 42,305 gsf five-story Senior Community that meets ENERGY STAR requirements. Located at 6th and Herr Streets in Harrisburg’s Midtown, its neighborhood’s historical significance includes serving as a safe haven on the underground railroad. The existing underutilized site is a surface parking area that will redeveloped into a vibrant modern affordable housing complex. The exterior facade responds to the existing fabric and vernacular context of the urban neighborhood. The main entrance is on Herr Street maintains the residential context while reinforcing the rhythm on the neighborhood’s adjacent structures. The site has access to public transportation, the local historical market, museums, banks, and other retail stores.
The project will provide one and two bedroom apartments and its amenities include the management office, laundry room on each floor a community room with a kitchen for use by the tenants and neighborhood groups. This community based project is currently under review of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) to qualify for the Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program for Pennsylvania.
