The Penn State Hershey Eye Center combines the clinical care offered through the Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology with affiliated research and education programs from the Penn State College of Medicine. It is a community of committed clinicians, researchers, and educators working together to advance the patient care, research, education and service missions. The thirteen faculty members have expertise in all of the major Ophthalmic subspecialties, including: cornea/external diseases, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, ophthalmic plastics and reconstructive surgery, ocular pathology, pediatric ophthalmology, and vitreoretinal diseases.
In order to accommodate their expanding practice, in 2012, Murray Associates was engaged to develop a design that would incorporate the 700 suite into the 800 suite. This would increase the number of exam rooms by one third for a total of 18 exam lanes, each receiving new casework and the full complement of contemporary ophthalmology exam equipment.
The design of the newly expanded space also incorporated a new Eyeglass Dispensary and Optical Shop, work area, patient scheduling area, exam lanes, a laser procedure room, new lab, staff offices and a lounge. Three of the existing Pediatrics lanes within the 800 suite were reconfigured with new equipment and child-friendly wall murals. A fourth was added to accommodate younger patients. The waiting area has also undergone revisions to increase seating and introduce new furniture, finishes and lighting for patient comfort and expanded patient access to staff and flow points. New wayfinding signage further assists patients as the flow through the Clinic. All together, the 14,500 square foot suite will allow the staff to virtually double their patient capacity due to the new patient flow and dedicated Check-In and Check-Out desks.
