The Kinderhaus Historical Records & Archives project will create a central location for the Milton Hershey School’s historical artifacts. These artifacts will grouped into four categories which include Documents, Large Artifacts and Farm Equipment, Small Artifacts and Items and Artifacts Maintenance and Repair. Each category will be housed in individual buildings, as each has specific environmental control and security requirements.  Four buildings will be located adjacent to one another on the Milton Hershey School campus. The Kinderhaus and Workshop buildings exist and are scheduled for renovation and additions.

The Project will include:

• Kinderhaus, built in 1817, will house exhibits of Milton Hershey School Homelife thru the past near century, on a rotating display basis; and will include small artifacts and items displays, and seminar/small group meeting areas.  The two story house has a floor area 5,700 square feet.  A 2,450 square foot addition to the Kinderhaus will include a stair tower, reception area/connector to the Documents Vault.

• The Workshop, existing, will house the Artifacts maintenance and repair functions.  The floor area of the existing garage is 360 square feet. The existing 557 square foot attached carport will be enclosed.

• The Documents Vault, new, will securely house the Archive materials in Hi-Density storage units; and will include preparation and research facilities, and some small item artifacts.  The floor area is 2,450 square feet including the reception area/connector and stairtower to the Kinderhaus.

• The Annex, new, will house the large Artifacts and Farm Equipment, and some small artifacts and items that are less environmentally vulnerable; also included will be a small workshop.  The gross floor area is 6,600 square feet.
