Murray Associates worked in conjunction with the Building Committee and Board Members to create spaces that would allow the staff to better serve their guests of the shelter through ministry, housing, protection from inclement weather, access to food, counseling and offer an opportunity to change their life’s direction.
Prior to the renovation, the main entrance was less than inviting. A new glass enclosed guest lounge has replaced the former stage. The introduction of the new stair tower and elevator allows full access to all staff and guests to all floors for the first time in the Mission’s history at this location. New increased capacity code compliant toilet rooms with showers were designed for each dormitory. The second floor also underwent a complete upgrade with new multi occupant guest bedrooms, kitchens, toilet and shower facilities. The new Helman’s dorm now occupies a portion of the east porch. Classrooms and staff offices now occupy the third floor and allows staff to council guests one-on-one or in group settings. Other guest amenities include an enlarged laundry room and exercise room.
As the design for the Men’s shelter began to unfold, a design developed for a new annex building to replace the former Hotel, which occupied the adjacent property to the east. The program for the new two-story structure included a new expanded food service venue, donation center, medical center on the ground floor, an administrative suite, community room, classrooms, dining area, recreational room and a health suite. This portion of the project is unbuilt and awaiting funding.
