Infirmary

The intrinsic challenge of this project was integrating a new 90,000 s.f. designed infirmary into the original, historic infirmary and the landscape of Milton Hershey Campus.

The historic significance of the original facility cannot be overstated:  Milton Hershey built the Hershey Hospital in 1924 and it served the school and community from that time until its closure in 1970.  Due to the significance of its having served as the sole health care facility for generations of community residents, as well as the fact that Milton S. Hershey passed away in the facility, extensive programming discussions centered on the basic design challenge of “how much of this legacy can be preserved?”

The dining room and the administrative offices capture breath-taking views of Founder’s Hall and the surrounding campus.

The living roof produces an intimacy and partnership with the rural nature of the campus.
The newly designed facility meets LEED “Silver” guidelines and sustainable design is prevalent throughout.

Construction was accomplished in two phases of new construction and renovation around a demanding academic schedule.

Facilities include:  a hospital-like extended stay wing incorporating full nursing stations, isolation room, and comprehensive security features; First Care facilities to address emergent care needs; autonomous Eye Clinic for entire campus use; a separate wing for Behavioral Services and administrative offices; a small gymnasium; and full cafeteria and dining facility.
