Cannon Village

Cannon Village is the central business district of Kannapolis, North Carolina. Murray Associates developed a new master plan for this fifteen square block area which included over 600,000 square feet of retail and commercial space.

The master plan added more than 400,000 square feet of retail and mixed-use buildings.  Manufacturers’ factory outlets occupy more than 75% of all retail space.  Both renovated and new buildings were designed in a manner responsive to the unique stylistic genre of early 20th century America.

Cannon Avenue is a primary north-south axis of the downtown.  At the north end of this axis the Cannon Mills executive offices open on to a park with pedestrian paths and a lakeside promenade. A newly created Civic Center marks the south terminus of the axis.  Fronting on the plaza is to be a mid-rise hotel with conference facilities, meeting rooms, and restaurants.  An upper level pedestrian bridge is to link the hotel to a nearby performing arts center.  On the opposite side of the plaza there is to be a new building housing professional offices and a museum.

The Civic Plaza serves as a major public gathering place and home for various community and ceremonial functions.  The Oak Avenue Mall represents first phase con­struction of new retail space in the central business district.  In addition, renovations of major downtown structures have already been accomplished.  Parking garages and new infill buildings are to be built in various locations throughout the town.

Some of the many building projects completed by Murray Associates in conjunction with the master plan include:

Cannon Village is the central business district of Kannapolis, devoted primarily to retail sales.  Within this fifteen square block area both renovated and new buildings have been developed in a manner responsive to the unique historic style of the area, together with brick sidewalks, street furniture and landscaping.

The Oak Avenue Mall was the first new retail facility in the central business district.  A brick courtyard, with benches and landscaping including an ancient Pin Oak tree, provide the major focus.  The plan encom­passes a total enclosed area of over 65,000 sq. ft.

The Charles A. Cannon Memorial Library is part of the Cabarrus County library system.  It is adjacent to a new YMCA, a new Senior Center and the Village Park.  The Library houses its collection and offices in three pavilions clustered around a day lighted circulation area.

The Cannon Memorial YMCA and Community Center is a 53,000 square foot building faced with red brick in an arcaded motif.  Hipped, shingled roofs over the pool, gymnasium and community center blend with the other buildings in the complex and contribute to the park-like atmosphere. 

The Senior Center houses a variety of activities such as crafts, adult education, meetings, films, and exhibits.  The building contains five multi-purpose activity rooms of varying sizes clustered around a day lighted common area and ancillary spaces.  Doors lead from each major space to outdoor areas where many activities take place in good weather.

The Performance Pavilion in the Village Park hosts concerts of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and other groups.  Its colorful awnings and festive banners set a festive mood for outdoor events.
